These are arts-based, educational camps run by Rachel Sherk and Aaron Rourk, who are both artists, taught at Saint Ann’s School from 2012-2018, and who are highly educated (see bios). The camps are divided into two sessions—morning and afternoon. The programming is specialized and focuses on different arts techniques and themes (see specific camp weeks for details). We keep the class size at at 1:5 teacher/student ratio.
JULY 23rd-JULY 27th
Costuming/Songwriting/Mask-Making in Collaboration with Designer Chloe Bernbach
1st Grade-4th Grade Kids
*Higher weekly price to support our collaboration with designer Chloe Bernbach.
Join us as we create original characters! We will develop a fictional persona as we explore story and identity through sewing, mask-making, and songwriting. We will look at various artworks, artists and designers as we explore creating characters. In this camp we will:
-Costume (play and sew as we explore elementary hand and machine sewing techniques, embellish and create costumes that are both decorative and functional.)
-Make masks (everyone will design a mask concept, create a form and build individual masks using paper-mâché)
-Write and record songs (using our voice/ukulele/keys/percussion we will learn basic techniques as we both play new instruments and write original songs that are inspired by the characters we have created.)
Creative Playwriting, Songwriting and Costume-Making
In this camp we will read mythologies from a variety of traditions, thinking about character and story, as we dive into our own creative playwriting and songwriting. Along with writing our own play and songs to accompany, we will create original costumes based on the characters we develop. We will begin the process of costuming by studying various garments through both a historic and contemporary lens, drawing inspiration from all over! After sketching, we will make the costumes! The week will end with a staged reading (in costume of course!) of our new script, complete with song!
playwriting (a form of creative writing)
costuming (elementary hand-sewing and decorative costume embellishment)
Join us as we play with stories! We will explore stories from a variety of mythologies from across the globe, adapting our favorites into a script for the stage, complete with original songs. We will design and create puppets with papiér-mâché and a variety of materials and oddities, learning how to operate them as we practice performing both songs and script.
Learn both the art of songwriting and how to use basic recording equipment! In this three day intensive, we will dive right into writing original songs using the ukulele, keyboard and percussion. We will learn the fundamentals of playing an instrument, while also exploring various songwriting techniques and structures. We will then record or original songs, learning how to set up microphones and how to use recording computer software. No experience is necessary in any of the above!
In this week long camp we will think about things in miniature. We will look at artists who work in small scales, along with reading stories that deal with tiny worlds. We will create our own minuscule puppets and puppet-worlds, inventing short, original tales to go along!
puppet-making (papiér-mâche, creating moveable joints, use of unusual and recycled materials)
