Songwriting: Story to Song

K-5th grade

Stories are the stuff of life - they orient us to our world, inspire us and connect us. Songs allow us to speak in the language of emotion. Is there a better combination?

In this class children will learn the art of songwriting – writing lyrics, composing melodies, deciding which kind of harmony works best for the lyrical content – while Aaron accompanies on the piano. They will even gain some experience using audio recording technologies (microphones, software, etc) as we record the finished songs!

Join us as we transform classic children’s stories into beautiful, original songs.

Story titles that we will work with may include:

• Tove Jansson’s Moomintroll series

• Alice and Wonderland

• The Little Prince

• selections from Greek Mythology

• books from William Steig’s oeuvre

• or perhaps something one of your children suggests!
